In the year of glitz, glamour and jewelry abundance, there are days when all you feel like wearing is a dainty ring with a little bit of cheek or flash to get you out the door. Spring 2012 may be all about color and stacking on the jewelry, but to every ying there needs to be a yang, and bubbling below is the trend of the small and minimal.
Dainty rings, in some cases, extremely dainty, where the shank is barely visible is somewhat of a hark back to the minimal 90s, but with a twist, of course. The flash, geometric and animal trends have filtered down and you can find the cutest little rings with little skulls, tiny fox heads and, everyone’s favorite, diamonds. Being that these rings are very small, it actually makes them very affordable, and you can now get yourself a gorgeous gold diamond ring in the 100s.
My favorite rings rings are the little animal heads, with the Madewell foxtrot ring, with a little fox head probably the ring that most captures my imagination. And at $15, its a steal. I am also really liking the unusual stone settings. Jennifer Meyer and Viveka Bergstrom have the coolest oblong stone settings, that give you an unexpected sparkle. Very original.
The fun of exploring this trend is that you enter into a different realm of designers. Whilst most fashion jewelry designers are focusing on the world of statement jewelry, with tribal influences and color, there is a whole niche of designers that have made their careers focusing on the small, cute and dainty. Jennifer Meyer is one of them, Jacquie Aiche, Ginette_ny as well. Verameat, that can never be accused of lack of imagination, also has the most fun collection of small animal rings, featuring birds, pigs, foxes and even a french bulldog. Of course, Verameat can also go big, their Harold and Maud or stealth bomber ring, cases in point;)
If you’re not into the weird and wonderful but rather have a tasteful and dainty twist on the classic diamond ring, there are plenty of designs to choose from. Ron Hami has a fun diamond studded ring, with Laurent Wolf creating a more hand shaped version. Jennifer Meyer has a great selection, and for the truly petite diamond rings go for Jacquie Aiche and Ginette_ny. Of course, you don’t have to complete disregard the current trend, and you can always stack your favorite small rings to create your own visual menagerie.
